For those who first enter the sphere of the Spa at Maya, an unprecedented view is about to greet them as the footpath across the Maya Ubud Resort & Spa's garden leads them towards a wooden balcony. And from this vantage point, over the edge is the high view of the densely foliaged Petanu River, and faintly audible is the rushing flow of water through a valley that comfortably nestles the Spa at Maya's reception and villas high on the right.

Organic corner and no fat, no cholesterol, no salt, and low calorie cuisine. |

Also from this platform the River Café and its elegantly curved leisure pool can be seen gleaming in the sunlight below. To descend to this realm, access is a step away. Over to the right a dedicated elevator transports you down into the valley's crevice, and as its door opens the discovery is yours. First to come into sight is the café and its shady table settings, serving healthy food after or prior to the treatments that all complement the holistic experience at the Spa at Maya. The overture of spa conscious menu items are characterized by no fat, no cholesterol, no salt, and low calorie ingredients.
The River Café now also features an organic corner that is as insightful as it is healthy, providing a display of unique organic produce in a wonderful array, viewable aside the counter. The collection is comprised of the specimens of greens that can be magically blended and prepared into health drinks, such as a soothing glass of wheat grass juice or lemon ginger.
From the spa reception towards the valley and across is a finely set row of spa villas. The river is almost hidden amidst the lush tropical forested dale. The spa offers a choice of private treatment pavilions that provide experiences through the use of aromatic oils that sooth and relax. The riverside spa, featuring three single and two double treatment pavilions, all with private facilities and hot tubs, overlooks the river. Double treatment pavilions allow couples to experience relaxation together and share the subtle and unwinding atmosphere.
The Spa at Maya has recently added three new double treatment pavilions. Located a distance behind the River Café and along the Petanu bank, the new pavilions are connected to the primary treatment villas which nestle on the southern height of the valley by a boardwalk constructed along the river's edge. This adds to the already exquisite riverwalk experience as guests are escorted to their treatments.
Each of the new spacious open thatched pavilions are equipped with two treatment tables and feature a separate dressing room, double outdoor showers and an indoor shower, large handcrafted stainless steel bathtub, manicure and pedicure area, toilet facilities and daybeds overhanging the river where clients can relax and enjoy refreshment after treatment. Each pavilion's interior is a beautiful combination of natural stone, soft gray marble, teak wood, frosted glass and water-themed motifs. The back walls of each pavilion are lichen clad natural rock embankments.
Spa treatments that can be experienced among the broad range of soothing and energizing treatments include the remedial Hot Compress Herbal, a deeply relaxing, detoxifying and anti-inflammatory treatment. It soothes aching muscles, increases blood circulation, and relieves aches and pains. This 60-minute treatment utilizes the bounty of Bali's own natural curative arsenal. Two pouches are stuffed with Maya's special blend of eleven locally harvested traditional healing herbs including ginger, turmeric, galangal, betel, pomelo, turmeric and cinnamon.
The pouches are heated in a steamer and the warm steaming bundles are alternately applied directly to the skin. The essential antiseptic, antibacterial, warming, stimulating and healing properties of the herbs evaporate into the steam and then are absorbed into the skin before condensing again into the cotton cloth in which the herbs are wrapped. Hot compresses provide marked relief of symptoms associated with rheumatism, arthritis or other joint stiffness.
A number of the traditional herbs used in the compress possess aroma-therapeutic stress relieving and calming properties. The same ingredients are then used in the warm water of the bathtub, creating a full-size steamy concoction for you to soothe yourself in, bodily and aromatically. And after the total experience, you get to bring home a complimentary packet of the herbs for potpourri or to bathe in at home.
