Italian Pair Proven
The Italian pair Francesca Schiavone and Flavia Pennetta defeated Yung-Jan Chan and Chia-Jung Chuang of Taiwan 7-6 1-6 8-6 to reach the quarter-finals as this went to press during the Beijing Olympics’ doubles competition.
Schiavone and Pennetta, who will both compete at the Commonwealth Bank Tennis Classic this month, are better known for their expertise on the singles court, with Schiavone currently ranked 26 and Pennetta 17. But they have also proved themselves in doubles before, with Schiavone reaching the final of the 2008 French Open as well as the Bali semi-finals in 2005, and Pennetta winning two titles this year as well as reaching the final in Los Angeles.
Schiavone and Pennetta will join other top players such as 2007 finalist Daniela Hantuchova, former world number three Nadia Petrova, Wimbledon semi-finalist Jie Zheng and popular Swiss left-hander Patty Schnyder when play gets underway at the Grand Hyatt Resort Nusa Dua, commencing in its final format, September 7-14.

Arts... Envoy!
Internationally renowned Balinese artists I Dewa Putu Sudiantara, Desak Putu Eka Suciari and I Dewa Ketut Sukadana traveled to Australia to perform at the Darwin Festival from August 14-31. The artists joined Darwin’s popular Tunas Mekar Cultural Collective as special guests at the Pesona Indonesia concert in the Darwin Botanic Gardens. The artists also visited local schools in Darwin to share Bali’s unique traditions, music and culture with Australian children. The visit was funded by the Australian Government through the Australia-Indonesia Institute.
